Kangxi Era

1662 - 1722

 

By suppressing Oboi, Emperor Kangxi was able to fully control his empire in which he inherited from his father. Kangxi's era was the marking of the beginning of the most prosperous period of the Great Qing. Emperor Kangxi ruled for 61 years, one of the world longest reign king. Under his leadership, the Qing was able to completely subjugate the surrounding land such as the kingdom of Tungning in Taiwan and stopped the invading of Russia in Amur river. Furthermore, the emperor adopted Neo-Confucian from the previous dynasty so the Han and the Manchus people can live peacefully in harmony with each other. Through the civil examination, the Han scholars could also become an official in the Qing empire. As a result, his ruling made the distinction between origin became less significant. On the other hand, with the recognition of Central Asia as a supreme power, the Qing was able to hold its border against their neighbors and established a high position against other countries. For example, other countries' king had to lower themselves when they met the Qing king as a way of showing respect and low standing. Nevertheless, Emperor Kangxi gave the citizens a stable and rich economy in which he increased the national treasure from around 15 million taels in his first year of reign to 32 million taels at the end of his kingship. In the last few years of his kingship, citizens didn't have to pay tax because the national treasure had a large amount of surplus. Emperor Kangxi was one of the greatest emperors in the history of China due to his intelligence and hardworking attitude who were actually care and love his citizens.

Legacy

Kangxi dictionary

In 1710, Emperor Kangxi ordered his scholars to compose a dictionary that contained about 47,000 characters and 2,000 graphic variants in which people rarely used in their daily life. The dictionary enabled more people to approach literature and lay the foundation for an advanced society for the future generation. Nowadays, people in China are still using and republishing the Kangxi dictionary .

Foreign Trading

After conquering Taiwan, Kangxi opened forts in Yangtze and enabled trading with foreign countries such as Europe. At these ports, foreign traders used silver to buy tea, silk and treasures from the Chinese. As a result, the economy of the Qing improved and led to the prosperous era of China.
